Pedro Martinez and John Martin Old Time Baseball Game – MLB Network

MLB Network: Oldtime Baseball Game with Pedro Martinez and John Martin from DGA Productions on Vimeo.

John Martin passed away after a 2 year fight with ALS. He was a friend, jokester, cameraman, a salt of the earth kind of guy. ALS spares no one but it does give one small perk. Said best by fellow cameraman Pat Gamere: “Most people don’t get the opportunity to know how much they’re loved while they’re still here living. What a gift.”

During John’s battle, we filmed a story at the annual Oldtime Baseball Game, which chose to donate the proceeds to John and his family. Pedro Martinez headlined the event, and a lot of money was raised. John, we will forever miss seeing you out there – grinding, hoaxing, laughing, and giving us your gifts.

Advocate for a Cure

“The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.”

Hundreds of people jumping into the sea in winter will test the credibility of this quote from Isak Dinesen. I have ALS and ALS has no cure and there is no treatment. These people plunging into the frigid water is my treatment. Millions of people around the world dumping water and ice over their heads is my treatment. I have made awareness of this horrific disease my mission and without your help ALS would not be at the forefront of national news. Hundreds of millions of dollars would not have been raised to help find a treatment or a cure. Your sweat and tears are very much appreciated and I Thank you.

HBO Real Sports – Ray Greenhalge

When Ray Greenhalge was born seven weeks prematurely, doctors said he would never walk or talk as a result of the debilitating muscle disorder cerebral palsy, as well as severe fluid on the brain. Now, 26 years later, he’s probably more talkative and physically active than most his age – an age many feared he wouldn’t reach. The nephew and godson of retired boxer Micky Ward, best known for his historic trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti in 2002 and 2003, Greenhalge has a unique passion for boxing, which gives him a sense of direction. He also proves to be every bit as tough as his uncle, with whom he spars ten rounds every Saturday, as well as engaging in two- to three-hour daily gym workouts. REAL SPORTS correspondent Bernard Goldberg traveled to Massachusetts to hear Greenhalge’s inspirational story.

New Zealand

Kenny Mayne’s Wider World of Sports pressed on last month into Queenstown, New Zealand, home of all things extreme. If you’re into white water rafting, bungee jumping, sky-diving, binge drinking or helicopter drop snowboarding, this place is for you. Set amongst mountains dubbed “The Remarkables”, Queenstown is stunning with snow-capped peaks in every direction. Crisp and pure, it felt very much like the Colorado Rockies, only with much less human interference. A perfect spot for Kenny to get in touch with his daring side (which hasn’t really been on display thus far). Stills from the shoot can be seen here on flickr.

Andrus and I were able to have some down time at night to shoot time lapses off our hotel balcony, some of which can be seen in the video above. There are so many components that go into shooting good time lapse video, particularly at night. Add a programmable moving dolly like the one we own from Kessler and things get even more complicated. Camera settings, intervalometer settings, weather, ability to leave the camera (or baby sit it for hours), temperature, reflected light from sources you don’t want to see, power/charged batteries, post process – twenty other considerations all contribute to making a good time lapse. We had another issue in that we were sent to New Zealand not to get beauty shots but to capture Kenny being silly, leaving us precious few moments to shoot pretty stuff.
